WELCOME TO OUR WORLD

We measure our success through our staff and our customers.

Communication is a word often bandied about.  But what, actually does communication mean? It doesn't mean listening or talking, but it does mean hearing and being heard. If you break down the semantics it becomes quite obvious, as well as the meaning of seeing and being seen.

Most of the staff at K&S have been with us since we established. Everyone knows and respects their positions and everyone is equal. Everyone has a right of a point of view and decisions are based on these points of view.

The expression: "there are many ways to skin a cat" means there is no right way to go from A to B. What is important is the setting off and arrival. For us, the start is way before the customer contacts us with orders or to talk about new products. The start for us is the years of working together, through confusion, conflict and resolution. This is communication.

Arrival is the knowledge we can and will be able to hear and understand what our customers want.

From A to B there are some fast downhills, rivers to cross and hills to climb, but in no part of this journey is there a short cut. It is not in our culture.

Obviously, we all want to enjoy the ride!

METAL WALL SCULPTURE

Creating 3 D Illusions in laser cut metal.

A bit of imagination, a bit of geometry and a whole host of patience is required to create the technical drawings we use for 3 D illusions especially.

Modern Wall Decor

IMetal Artwork

Is this laser cut metal artwork "ART"?
We are not artists and therefore would never make this sort of claim. For us, the challenge is technical .

Metal Artwork

Any colour you desire

Colour is not for us to decide, so we leave this up to you. We show what can be achieved with a splash of colour.

Metal Wall Art

Circular Brain Twister

We are taking the concept of laser cut wall decor to the next level, we believe.
Our designs are fairly unique in the home decor market, We always use quality 2mm thick steel plate and powder coat in pretty much any colour available.

Contemporary Wall Art

Time telling brain bender

Not only do we design an manufacture, Contemporary Wall art that makes a statement.
We also produce wall clocks which add movement and colour to to these peices.

Laser Cut Wall Decor.

Metal Wall Sculpture.

Well, what else would you call it? Colours designs and powder coat finishes that make any location, indoors or outside pop!

A major obstacle in powder coated metal finishes is where pieces are welded together. Although we only Mig weld to ensure a very strong joint it is almost impossible to achieve a smooth finish after grinding.

As we prefer to powder coat our metal, it is almost impossible to find a filler which can withstand temperatures of around 200 deg C. Generally, in designing the frames we can avoid many places where welds are visible but we cannot be 100% successful in this, so a high temp filler which also has similar electrostatic properties to metal, so that the powder coat will "stick" to it before it goes in the oven is something we decided we wanted.

This product does exist but unfortunately we could not find it available in China.

Therefore we had to be creative and found a high temp two part filler and added iron filings to ensure a decent electro ~ static attraction when spraying on the powder.

The second picture is a piece of square bar which we deliberately welded badly, ground down and then filled with our metal filings compound. Sanding down, once set was extremely slow and hard work!

But somewhere along this piece of welded pipe is a weld perpendicular to the sides.

We are quite pleased with the result.

And we think perhaps we should be doing something to attend to the cracks in the concrete in the background!!!

Laser Cut Screens, panels and fencing.

The hardest part about laser cutting is the design work.
Tessellations are based on a drawing in a square, triangle or hexagon and then they simply become a geometric repetition of this intial shape.
Simple shapes can be drawn and then they can be added to to create something that resembles something in our world. The hard part is deciding on the object first and then shoehorning it into a tesselation. It's not easy!!!!
We have a large range of laser cut panels which can be sized to your own requirement using our designs or even something you fancy the look of..
Drop us a line and let us know!

When a client comes to you asking for "handlebars", we have to ask the client a whole host of questions. Firstly, handlebars need to be able to bend if there is an accident. Therefore we need to know the markets our customer is going to be selling to. The reason for this is because we need to know average heights and weights of the people using them. In the unfortunate situation of an accident a lot of momentum of the driver is transferred into force on the handlebars. If the handlebars are too rigid serious bone breakages can be experienced in the thumbs and wrists of the driver.
Country               Average Height                     Weight            Bmi
Netherlands          1.84 m                                  87.9 kg            26.1
Montenegro         1.83 m                                  90.4 kg           27
Denmark                  1.82 m                                  86.8 kg           26.3
Pakistan                  1.67 m                                   64.7 kg           23.3
Bangladesh            1.65 m                                   57.7 kg           21.3
China                       1.75 m                                   73.5 kg           24.1

As you can see, Heights, and weights vary quite a lot depending on which continent you are considering. A full list of this data can be found if you CLICK HERE.
Therefore, in order to calculate what material and how strong this material is, requires us to be able to understand this information.

Average height is also valuable as it allows us to calculate the height of the bars, the rake, the width of the bars and the distance of the yoke mountings to the seat.

We need to know what switchgear and twist grips the customer is going to be using with these handlebars and what configuration he wants with regards to the wiring and cabling.

Then we can design something to show to the customer.

With the customers' approval we can then proceed to creating the prototype samples.

With approval we can then go into production.

PENNY FARTHINGS

The penny farthing was the first two wheeled machine to be actually given the name “BICYCLE”. It also was called the HIGH WHEEL for the same obvious reason it got the name Penny Farthing. At that time, the Penny was the largest coin in circulation and the Farthing was the smallest..
It is claimed by “primary facts.com” that this bicycle was designed in 1878 by a British Victorian inventor, James Starley. However it’s origins can be traced back to French bicycle maker who seemed to have created the first “High Bicycle”, according to “bicycle history.net”.
The development happened somewhere between the 1860’s and 1880’s when the first mass produced chain driven boneshakers were becoming popular.
During this time a whole host of designers and engineers were coming up with quite a plethora of designs of which the penny farthing happened to be just one.
Made of a cast iron frame with a front wheel of around 2 m in diameter, it appeared to be a very impractical and dangerous design.
Dangerous it was and quite a few people ended up dying from the numerous falls. However, impractical it was not as the big front wheel with pedals directly mounted to the hub was actually a lot more comfortable and easier to ride over the rough roads of the period. It was also faster than other bicycles.
Because the frame was made from cast iron, with solid rubber wheels it was also very expensive and thus became a toy for rich young men who actually turned bicycling into a recreation activity and a sport.
It was Englishman, James Starley who created a model he called “Ariel”. He revolutionized many aspects of bicycle design and manufacture, introducing ball bearings, solid rubber tires, hollowed metal steel frames and many more important inventions that soon became standard in entire bicycle industry.
In 1878, the Columbia bicycle factory opened in the United States, and the machine became popular there as well.
However, it was James Starley’s nephew who facilitated the demise of the penny farthing by inventing the ROVER SAFETY BICYCLE, which obviously had a saddle much closer to the ground, was faster than the Penny Farthing and along with the invention of the pneumatic tyre, the last nail in it’s coffin hand been well and truly hammered in.
By 1920, all the kinks and problems with safety bicycles were largely ironed out, and the last official penny-farthing cycling races happened during the 1920s. Today, nearly 150 years after they were first invented, penny farthings can be seen both as a restorations of the old models and brand new designs that are now made by several manufacturers around the world.
They are mostly seen on the streets during various festivals and in movies with stories set in Victorian England or Revolutionary France, as well as circuses and entertainment events.
Our laser cut penny farthings come with a basket of flowers.. FOR FREE.. They are cut out of 2mm thick steel plate and powder coated. Stock size is 35x35cm and come complete with both double sided 3M tape for easy fixing to walls plus screw into wall magnets giving them a slight offset and some nice shadow effects.
As a compliment to these we also supply them with a clock mechanism, making this wall art, not just fun but also functional.
All of our wall art can be used indoors and outdoors depending on how the mood takes you!

There are literally thousands of geometric optical illusions on line.

Basicaly, the trick is to convince the eyes, which see in three dimensions, that the two dimensional object you are looking at is actually three dimensions.

Visual or Optical Illusions can be defined by the nature of the difference between objects and and what your brain tells you what you are seeing.

These can be in brightness or color, called intensive properties of targets, e.g. Mach Bands, (Mach bands - Wikipedia), or they can be in their location, size, orientation or depth. This second type is called extensive.

When an illusion involves properties that fall within the purview of geometry it is called "geometrical-optica", a term given to it in the first scientific paper devoted to the topic by J.J. Oppel, a German high-school teacher.

In 1854. It was taken up by Wilhelm Wundt, widely regarded as the founder of experimental psychology, and is now universally used.

Probably the most famous of all people who worked with optical illusions was M C ESCHER           (M. C. Escher - Wikipedia)
Escher was a Dutch graphic artist who made mathematically inspired woodcuts, lithographs, and mezzotints. Despite wide popular interest, Escher was for most of his life neglected in the art world, even in his native Netherlands. He was 70 before a retrospective exhibition was held. In the late twentieth century, he became more widely appreciated, and in the twenty-first century he has been celebrated in exhibitions around the world.

He was particularly famous for tesselations.

A tessellation is a pattern of shapes repeated to fill a plane. The shapes do not overlap and there are no gaps. The figure above composed of squares is a tessellation since the are no gaps or overlaps between any 2 squares. The figure above composed of regular pentagons is not a tessellation since there are gaps between the tessellations in grey.

Making tesselations is quite simple and there are many sites online showing you how this is achieved. For example, see this youtube video: How to make a Tessellation - step by step tutorial - YouTube by Mr Otter.

Making random shape tesselations is quite simple, then with paint and decoration you can easily create a series of matching shapes that resemble, fish, and the like.

Hexagons, squares and triangles are some of the simplest tesselations around. However, it is quite difficult to create a successful laser cut tessalation from steel plate when you are limited by generally only being able to use a single colour when powdercoating.

Another limitation of laser cut metal objects is that the solids remaining after cutting have to be continuous, or joined together by connecting solids.

Our intention is to produce wall art or wall decor which is simple to mount on the walls and also effective as a finished, single product.

As you can see from the attached laser cut wall hanging, geometric size and shape needs to be scaled proportionately so it actually starts to work as an optical illusion or at least brain teaser. This piece is 45cm x 45cm.

We think it is close to working well, but still needs a little more fine tuning.

NAUGHTY WALLMART        Jun 15 2022

Being new to the on line shopping and still to get any sales, it's very important to regularly check on line traffic and then search via google or yahoo to see if any products appear during these searches.
In the world of laser cut art, wall decor, metal laser cutting, whatever you want to call it there is a plethora of product to chose from.
Therefore we found it rather amusing and a bit of a compliment to see that Walmart chose to use one of our pictures to advertise their products.
If you click on this link you will hopefully see our French Bulldog..
laser cut wall decor - SEE LINK HERE
Not only have they copied our picture but also taken the time to photoshop out our K&S logo..
Sadly, if you want to buy this product from them, they are unsurprisingly out of stock. They never had any in the first place.
Wallmart makes it almost impossible to register a company outside of the USA as you need a Dunn and Bradstreet financial report.
On line shopping portals actually include tax and duty in their price packages. So tax and duty gets paid!
The bottom line is that this practice is not particularly moral. However the upshot is Wallmart is giving us free advertising of our products.

A Bit About The Beswick Flying Ducks

JUNE 6, 2022

It all begins in the home of English pottery, Stoke-on-Trent, at the Beswick Factory. In 1938 they started producing wall mounted Mallard ducks in five sizes (as well as swans, kingfishers, swallows and a variety of other birds).

James Wright Beswick, founded the pottery in 1894, and produced a range of high quality porcelain farm characters as well as Beatrix Potter and many other characters including Mickey Mouse!

You can read about the Beswick Pottery on Wickipedia by Clicking here.

In 1969 the factory was sold to Doulton and Co, The factory eventually closed in 2002 and the John Beswick brand was sold in 2004 to Dartington Crystal, who continue to produce products under the John Beswick brand.

The Beswick flying ducks were first introduced in 1938 and were all the rage in the 1950's and 60's. They found fame by being in the very first episode of Coronation street which aired on December 9th 1960. Daily Mail columnist Ken Irwin claimed the series would only last three weeks! This just goes to prove journalists should stick to writing the news!

Nowadays, an original set of five of these ducks in good condition is worth well over $1,000.oo!

You can also read about Coronation Street in Wikipedia as well by clicking here.

I was turned onto the Beswick Ducks when my sister gave me a set of three in the 80's. Frankly I didn't think much of them, but when given a gift by a family member I was not only stuck with them, but also had to stick them on the wall. They were plaster cast, modern versions of the classic and had more vibrant colours. They looked just fantastic on the walls, and since that time I have never been without a set.

The times have changed and the laser cut pieces we make are a reflection of this history of the original flying ducks.

As with all laser cut steel wall art, a lot of consideration has to go into trying to keep a connection with the original, but also adding a contemporary aspect, I think is important.

Unless we got into airbrushing these ducks, we are pretty much stuck with just the one powder coated colour and just one colour does not suit everyone's taste.. Unless you're Henry Ford, that is!

This story would had been quite ironic for the racist Ford was, but in fact the early cars he produced came in a variety of colours, just like our ducks!

We have a couple of quite novel ways of attaching these items to the walls and each set of any of our wall cut art comes with magnets for easy removal and cleaning.

These are easy to screw into walls as we supply with rawl plugs which expand also for plasterboard walls. Actually, because these items are not heavy, just screwing the small screws into the plasterboard generaly will be sufficient.

We also supply along with this, some double sided 3M tape and instructions on how to use both the tape and the magnets.

The hardest part of laser cutting is actually taking a sketch, photograph or even an idea and turning it into something that works.
With only solid and void areas it is so important to consider not only how the product will look, but also how it interacts with the background to which it is mounted.

We don't have a state of the art set of factory buildings. They are just to keep the rain and sun out.

Last year a new customer asked us to make motorcycle handlebars for his electric 3 wheel utility vehicle, along with brake and suspension components. Our existing machine was not up to the job so we bought a fully automatic CNC bender, with two radii indexing.

It can be used for tubes and bar up to 50mm in diameter and is one of those machines you can just watch and watch when in operation.

The more complicated the product, the more time you can waste away watching!

Art of any kind is not what you would expect of a modern engineering workshop.
We had been successfully profiling metals with our old plasma cutter, and occasionally still do.
But in the world of precision, precision is what is required of metal profiles. Being able to cut steel sheet and other metals up to 15mm thick is what was needed.
So the boys went out and bought a new toy.
Famous artist, Daniel Krause, spent 30 years in China sculpting in many media, mostly bronze and became a good friend of K&S.
Being able to take artwork and turn it into data suitable for producing art in metals gives us the opportunity to learn just exactly how far we can take the posibilities of laser cutting.
Click on the picture and a link should take you to video of our laser cutter in action.
